MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
The McDonald Middle School in Mohawk (Greene County), Tennessee hosts a national award-winning student group called the Tennessee Students Against Pollution (TSAP). The members of the 2007 TSAP are pictured above. This committed student organization is affiliated with the Tennessee Environmental Education Association and is made of Seventh and Eighth Grade students. Under the guidance of their science teacher and sponsor, Pat Carpenter, these committed students are truly making a difference by taking on environmental projects each year for their school, in their community, and throughout Greene County.
The list of their accomplishments is impressive and includes: teaching energy conservation; recycling competitions; school clean-up and beautification programs; clean air campaigns (such as the "Great Air Pollution Challenge"); and raising funds to buy recycled products for their school playground. Their lasting commitment to environmental stewardship has also won them many state and national awards, including:
- TSAP of the Year (Twice)
- Young Ecologist Action Award
- President's Environmental Youth Award
- National Energy Education Development Project - State Award Winner and National Finalist (Ten Times)
- Good Sports Always Recycle (Four Times)
- Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's Environmental Stewardship Award (Four Times)
- Keep Tennessee Beautiful Award, and awarded status as a Green School.
The Clean Air Conservancy is proud to partner with the TSAP again in 2007 for their annual clean air campaign. Members of the group have raised funds and have worked with the Clean Air Conservancy to purchase and then permanently retire some of the Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) emission allowances that are sold each year through a public auction held as part of the US EPA's Clean Air Markets Program.
